Diamond Prices How does one value a diamond? "The four C's" is a term commonly used when discussing the price of diamonds. The term is used to refer to the four most important attributes of a diamond which determines the quality and value of a diamond. These attributes are: Carat weight, Colour, Clarity and Cut. Carat weight Carat weight refers to the size of a diamond. One carat is equal to one fifth of a gram. The heavier the diamond the more valuable it is. Diamond shape (Cut) The "cut" of a diamond can influence its value in two ways. Colour The colour of a diamond is graded on a scale from D to Z where D is colourless (exceptionally white) and Z is a tinted colour - usually light yellow. The whiter the diamond the more valuable. Diamonds do come in various other colours as well and they could be either less expensive (black and brown diamonds) or more expensive (intense yellow, pink, blue, etc.) than the normal colours. Clarity When we speak of a diamond's clarity, we are referring to the presence of identifying characteristics on (blemishes) and within (inclusions) the stone. Inclusions include flaws such as air bubbles, cracks, and non-diamond minerals found in the diamond. Blemishes include scratches, pits, and chips. Some blemishes occur during the cutting processes (most often at the girdle). Diamonds with no or few inclusions and blemishes are more highly valued than those with less clarity because they are rarer. Diamonds are graded for clarity under 10x loupe magnification. Grades range from Flawless (diamonds which are completely free of blemishes and inclusions), to Included 3 (diamonds which possess large, heavy blemishes and inclusions that are visible to the naked eye). |
